J’ai été surpris de la facilité d’installation de Rockbox sur mon iPod video. Il a suffit en effet que de décompresser le firmware téléchargeable sous forme d’un fichier .zip à la racine du iPod et ensuite d’installer le bootloader avec ipodpatcher. Ce dernier est un programme disponible sous forme binaire exécuté avec les droits de super-utilisateur.

Il faut ici préciser que le iPod devra avoir été formatté FAT32 au préalable. Si un système Windows est à portée, on peut simplement le brancher à l’ordinateur et iTunes effectuera cette opération.

Fait à noter, le firmware original d’Apple ne sera pas effacé après cette opération et toute la musique sera conservée. On peut d’ailleurs retourner à l’OS natif après redémarrage (MENU+SELECT) en activant le boutton HOLD.
