J’ai été sur­pris de la facil­ité d’installation de Rock­box sur mon iPod video. Il a suf­fit en effet que de décom­presser le firmware télécharge­able sous forme d’un fichier .zip à la racine du iPod et ensuite d’installer le boot­loader avec ipod­patcher. Ce dernier est un pro­gramme disponible sous forme binaire exé­cuté avec les droits de super-utilisateur.

Il faut ici pré­ciser que le iPod devra avoir été for­matté FAT32 au préal­able. Si un sys­tème Win­dows est à portée, on peut sim­ple­ment le brancher à l’ordinateur et iTunes effectuera cette opération.

Fait à noter, le firmware orig­i­nal d’Apple ne sera pas effacé après cette opéra­tion et toute la musique sera con­servée. On peut d’ailleurs retourner à l’OS natif après redé­mar­rage (MENU+SELECT) en acti­vant le bout­ton HOLD.
